ENTECH, the noteworthy trade platform dedicated to environmental technologies, recycling, and zero waste, took take the stage at the center of global trade,Istanbul Expo Center. 

President of Union of Municipalities of Turkey and Mayor of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Fatma Şahin delivered the opening speech of the Zero Waste Forum, taking place concurrently with ENTECH.

Organized on September 2-3-4, the Zero Waste Forum will welcome scientists, including Prof. Dr. Filiz Karaosmanoğlu, Prof. Dr. Ali Sınağ, Prof. Dr. Ayşen Erdinçler, Dr. Meltem Bayraktar, and public and private sector representatives, including Süleyman Acar, the Mayor of Kızılcahamam, which is Turkey’s first pilot municipality under the Zero Waste Program. They will be sharing their knowledge and experiences with the audience for a liveable future.

ENTECH Introduces New-Generation Technologies

Numerous countries, including Turkey, actualize significant R&D investments in the fields of environmental technologies, recycling, and zero waste for a liveable future. The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of the Republic of Turkey, on the other hand, has already made notable investments and started to reap their benefits.

The most recent technology developed by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization is three-dimensional software. Measuring distances up to 5 meters, the 3D software will detect the points causing air pollution instantly and thus carry out studies in order to reduce the pollution.

Turkey’s Zero Waste Project Wins UN Award

Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment and Urbanization of the Republic of Turkey, announced Turkey’s Zero Waste Project was honored with UN Development Program’s Global Goals Action Award.

“The Zero Waste Project, led by First Lady Emine Erdoğan and embraced by all segments of the Turkish society, earned international praise and received United Nations Development Program’s Global Goals Action Award,” said Minister Murat Kurum.

Pointing to the objective of the Zero Waste Project, which is to inherit a liveable world for next generations, Minister Kurum added, “I express my gratitude to First Lady Emine Erdoğan for her valuable contributions to the accomplishment of our project along with for their cooperation for a clean environment”.

Entech Exhibition which took place with the participation of First Lady Emine Erdogan and the Minister of Environment and Urbanization, Murat Kurum between October 17-20, left a mark on 2019 as the most environmentalist exhibition. Saving the Mediterranean Sea

In recent years, recycling gained more importance in Turkey and several projects were started in 2001 to raise awareness.

These environmental projects helped us take small steps to save natural resources and energy but sadly they’re not enough.

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), 95 percent of the waste floating in the Mediterranean and lying on its beaches is plastic. Most of the plastic waste is released from Turkey and Spain, followed by Italy, Egypt, and France.

WWF’s numbers show that 70-130,000 of microplastics (fragments smaller than 5mm) and 150- 500,000 million tonnes of macroplastics (the equivalent of 66,000 garbage trucks of plastics) dumped into the Mediterranean and other European seas every year.

Microplastics have reached 1.25 million fragments per km2 in the Mediterranean Sea, almost four times higher than in the North Pacific Ocean.

Plastic pollution can impact key economic sectors in the Mediterranean, especially fisheries and tourism.

Environmental problems and their solutions

Rapidly increasing population, over-industrialization, and mechanization, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, and chemicals are some of the reasons for the environmental problems we’re facing today.

Air, water, and land pollution have reached a level where all lives are in danger.

Urban environmental problems were born from the consequences of lack of accommodation: overcrowding, slum and squatter housing.

Disorganized and unplanned urbanization has caused problems of infrastructure, sewer systems, solid waste collection, and storage.

Another important environmental problem is rapid population growth. Turkey has one of the highest population growth rate among the OECD countries. According to the population forecasting of UN, Turkey’s population is expected to rise to 92 million by 2025.

Unplanned urbanization leads to unplanned industrialization. When industrial waste isn’t removed regularly, the problems become insoluble.
